Provisional General Construction Grant Awarded
The Trustees of the Marstons Mills Public Library received confirmation by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners that the Library has been awarded a Provisional General Construction Grant in the amount of $1.7 million, to go toward the building of a new community library on two acres of land in Burgess Park donated by the Town of Barnstable.
The Library has been on the State's list of pending capital projects since 2001 and will have seventeen months - until May 2005 - to raise the balance of monies needed to construct the library, a sum of $2.8 million toward the total construction costs of $4.5 million.
Anthony Alva, President of the Library's Board of Trustees said, "We are delighted that the state has evaluated Barnstable's community library project as one that deserves significant funding, and look forward to the opportunity to build a first-class library for all the residents of the town of Barnstable."
Funding for this and twenty other library projects in Massachusetts was authorized in August 2002 in an omnibus bond bill (S2271) that allowed for the expenditure of up to $75 million for public library construction.
The grants help fund construction of new library buildings, additions/renovations, special projects, and the preliminary planning activities essential prior to embarking on a building program.
The Community Library at Burgess Park will be 15,000 square feet, as opposed to the current library at Marstons Mills, which has 3000 square feet. Among the features of the new building are:
A large children's collection and reading area.
A story hour and crafts room.
A separate young adults' collection, reading, and homework area.
Expanded space for adult reading and reference.
 A community meeting room.
 A local history room.
An information technology room with a dozen computers to allow access to the Internet and computer software, and also classes in the use of computers and data bases.
And significantly expanded spaces for collections, periodicals, audiovisual material, and library staff.
Many areas of the library have yet to be named. Those wishing to explore naming opportunities, planned gifts, and other ways of supporting the new building should call Sue Martin or Antonia Stephens at 508-428-5175.
