Council Report
Four councilors were present and reported:
Janice Barton: Discussed activities of the Town Council and its committees. Budget talks have occupied much of the year. The budget remains very tight, and cuts have been made to municipal employees and schools. The Council also has been working on more long-term plans, including efforts to increase the level of state funding for the schools. Her committee assignments include: The Youth Commission, School, Jan Eschbar, Water Quality, and Golf Committees.
Han Farnham, Vice President of the Council: Committee assignments include the Press Conference, Agenda, and Tax Equity Committees. He also serves on the Board of Assessors. Gave Demetrius Atsalis' email, to write to support of a bill reassigning state funds to schools based on the median income of the community. This formula would be advantageous to the Cape. He also announced several community events: Container Gardening Expo, June 26 th, 8 am - 4 pm, at Meetinghouse Farm. The Father's Day Car Show, June 20 th, 9 am - 2 pm, on Main Street. He also encouraged people to visit the town website.
Jimmy Crocker: Serves on the Airport, Department of Public Works, and the Local Comprehensive Plan Committees, among others. Notes that regulations of docks are being reexamined. Term limits are a current concern. The Department of Public Works is considering adding an over-ride to the ballot in the fall election.
Leah Curtis: Congratulated the Council on its ability to work together. She is on the Personnel, Appointments, and Housing Committees. Noted the Housing Committee is working hard to improve access to affordable housing in Barnstable, with a variety of programs including initiatives in workforce and senior housing. She too urged using the town website as a resource.
Old Business
Subcommittee Reports:
Burgess House: The annual report was submitted to the Secretary. The House has done well through the winter with few repairs needed to the house. Members were thanked or their vigilance. The barn urgently needs repairs. Labor has been volunteered, however, materials are still being negotiated with Home Depot. Joyce Landscaping was thanked for donating their services.
River Day: The annual report was submitted. Over 700 attended River day this year. Current maps of the watershed were made and compared with ones from the 1940's to illustrate the growth of the villages - these are presently at Burgess House. There were 6 educational stops in all. Both the MMVA and the Cape Cod Conservation District received $500. All had lots of fun. Various donors were thanked.
Village Day: Village Day promises to be very exciting. The event has been moved into the village proper and will include a 4-mile road race. Robert Swanson was introduced as coordinating the race. There is a goal of registering 300 people for the race, and volunteers to staff this entry-level race are needed. The race will start at 11 am. Registration opens at 10.
Membership And Newsletter: We have a newsletter, The Villager, and have had a nice response to it and the mailing for membership.
Scholarship: Scholarships of $500 each were awarded to Dugan Hayes, Justin Lacasse, and Joseph Coleman. Each is congratulated on his accomplishments.
Other Old Business:
Local Comprehensive Plan: Has met 4 times so far and updated the Plan draft. Additions include the mention of the village schools, horse farm, and airfield. Copies of the draft will soon be (we hope) at the library, town website, and post office.
Al Baker's Report: Herring Run: The run was a success this year. Good supplies of fish were caught. Liberty Hall: Will host a Father's Day Breakfast (June 20 th) at Liberty Hall. The Hall is also working on opening the old Hearse House at the cemetery as a historic site. They hope to locate an antique hearse belonging to the village in the building.
River Clean Up: The Next two Sundays there will be a clean up of the riverbanks; volunteers sought.
New Business
A presentation of two hibiscus plants was made to the outgoing president, Linda Edson, and treasurer, Peter Lavigne.
Bill McIntyre was nominated and accepted as candidate for the open seat on the Board. The remaining 3 board members up for election agreed to remain as candidates. No other nominations were made to the board. Hence the slate as presented: Bill McIntyre, Peter Lavigne, Al Baker, and Donna Lawson were passed unanimously.
Officers will be voted on at the July meeting.
Next Meeting
The next meeting is Tuesday, July 6th, at 7:00 PM.
