The Marstons Mills Herring Run
As many people observe each Spring, two almost indistinguishable species [alewife and blueback herring] migrate from the ocean up rivers and streams to lakes and ponds on Cape Cod and all along the coast of the northeast.
In Marstons Mills, they travel up through the three bays of Osterville/Cotuit into Prince Cove and then up the Marstons Mills River to Mill Pond at Routes 149 & 28 and continue up the river to Middle Pond.
Project To Count Herring
This year, and for the first time in Marstons Mills, we will undertake an effort the determine the size of the herring migration in the Marstons Mills River. Using procedures developed by the Massachusetts Division Of Marine Fisheries, we will employee a statistical sampling technique to project the total number of the migration.
This statistical model is driven by conducting many sampling sessions of 10 minutes in duration over the period on the migration [roughly April 1st through June 15th]. The sampling will be done in daylight hours and consists of simply counting the herring with a hand counter as they enter Mill Pond.
We need RELIABLE people to help in these efforts and are asking for your help!
If You'd Like To Participate, Here's How It Will Work:
Sign up below to get enrolled [we'll email back a confirmation that you've been enrolled].
We'll send a second email with information on how to take the counts and a schedule showing all of the periods that need to be covered. On that form you will indicate your availability, and then send that completed form back to us.
We'll add you to our master schedule and then send you a weekly schedule showing your assigned dates/times.
You'll take the counts at the designated times and then return the weekly sheets back to us at the end of each week.
As of April 2, 2006, with the people that have enrolled so far, the average counter will be doing about 20 counts - or 1 every 3 days. As more people join, that will be even less.
